Good morning students. Today you will work on your evolution "story" project. Spend some time researching the evolution concepts that are outlined in the project from the zoo. Then begin to create your evolutionary story that explains how the environmental pressures selected for the traits/adaptations in your fictional animal.

Today we went over the note on Biotechnology from Tuesday....it appears many of you were away that day. Please complete the textbook questions for homework (p. 281 #1,2,4,5 and p. 282 #8). Your bST project will be presented next Wednesday, so make sure you are in contact with your partner and you are working toward completing this project. Ask me for help with this if necessary!

Just some updates to the course schedule...
Remember that you should be working on your research of the BST issue when you have time. Your protein synthesis performance task will take place on Friday, so you should have all your work up to date, your notes organized, and bring all your resources with you to class on Friday.
There is new note under the Class Notes section called "Biotechnology Note" that you will want to have for Tuesday April 27th class.

Students have been working on their "dramatic representation" of DNA replication. These will be performed - and videotaped - on Wednesday.
We also have begun looking at protein synthesis. We've compared DNA to RNA and discussed the genetic code and transcription.
Please read sections 5.1 to 5.3 if you haven't done so already and complete the questions at the end of the protein synthesis note.

For students not in attendance today, please complete all work related to DNA replication (worksheet, watch the online animations of the process). Think about how you will work with the students in your class to demonstrate DNA replication through a "dramatic representation". You will work on this presentation tomorrow. You will also begin to study protein synthesis so be sure to come to class with the protein synthesis note that is posted under class notes. I've also posted a DNA review that you can do anytime before the test on this unit.

Today we began to study the new unit "Molecular Genetics". We discussed Hershey & Chase's experiment and the structure of DNA. There are some homework questions to do and a diagram of DNA (page 216, #2,3,4,6,7).

This week we have finished our study of cellular respiration (both aerobic and anaerobic). We are now working on learning the metabolic pathways of photosynthesis. Students are reminded that their cell respiration maps are due on Monday and your test will be on Wednesday next week.

During the week before March Break we finished up studying aerobic cellular respiration and then we discussed metabolic rate, alternative pathways for nutrients such as triglycerides and amino acids.
Today we discussed anaerobic respiration (a.k.a., fermentation). Students completed a fill in the blank worksheet on ethanol and lactic acid fermentation. They are now working on textbook questions (see under the Homework section) and their cell respiration maps. These "maps" will be due next Monday. Tomorrow is a work period for the text questions and the map.

We've started the second part of the first unit this week. On Monday we disussed an overview of cellular respiration. Note: this is chapter 2 of your textbook. On Tuesday we worked through Glycolysis - the first stage of cell respiration. Make sure that you are keeping up with textbook readings throughout the next few weeks of class. Also, make sure that you are paying attention to the "big picture" ideas in cellular respiration and not getting frustrated with all the little minute details of the stages that you DON'T need to memorize for future assessments.

If you've been absent you won't be able to access this note because you haven't been present to get your username and password for Google Docs. Important notice to all SBI4U students:
I've confirmed that I won't have the enzyme that is needed to perform the enzyme lab next week. It has been held up at the science supply company that I ordered from. So, I will be giving you your biochemistry test next week. I'm scheduling it for next Friday so that you have ample time to prepare for it. We will do some review next week. I would suggest that it's not too early to begin making study notes, or begin some other study activity, now. Check out the animations, tutorials, and videos that I've linked in the previous posts.

This week we have spent time taking up the big 3-D molecules lab. If you were absent for this, make sure you check your answers with someone in class. This is a very important study guide for the test on this material.
We then began looking at energy metabolism concepts in biology. This is a particularly difficult set of concepts in the course, so make sure you are devoting some time to this. Homework questions are listed at the right.
Your research report is due friday.

Today we worked through discussing the 3-D Macromolecules lab. We'll have to finish this on Monday. I've posted 2 new notes so you'll want to have those printed before Monday. Reminder: your research report is due on next Friday, so try to make some progress on this over the weekend. Have a great weekend....go Canada!

Today students completed part 2 of the 3-D molecules lab by using the HP mini-note computers. We will take up all the questions in this lab tomorrow. You should try to finish as many as you can for homework. You can view the text of the online portion of the lab at www.science.nelson.com, but you would need to download the CHIME plug-in if you want to be able to see the molecules in 3-D.

Today students discussed the textbook questions in groups. We then began the 3-D molecules lab. This will continue for the next few classes and will culminate on Friday. If you didn't complete the textbook questions, be sure to do these over this week.

Last week we worked through the macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. There is a large collection of textbook questions to complete related to this material. Students were also given another research class for their unit 1 research report (due Feb. 26th).

Today we discussed acids, bases, and buffer systems with a focus on the human carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer system. You are asked to read this section in the textbook and answer the questions as assigned at the end of the note. Remember that tomorrow in class you will discuss these answers in a small group and then work through reading about the macromolecules, carbohydrates, and lipids. Please answer the questions that are listed at the end of the carb section. See you Wednesday.

Students took up last night's homework and then began to work through the rest of the first note about molecular shapes and polarity. They also started to work through the rest of the second note on intermolecular forces and water. Please have the water table completed for homework. I've also posted the unit 1 application assignment that you will begin to work on tomorrow. I'd recommend that you read it over tonight and perhaps come to class tomorrow with an idea of what molecule you'd like to research.

Today we discussed the various types of learning styles that were identified yesterday through the Index of Learning Styles Questionaire that was completed. We also discussed some strategies types of learners should use when in the classroom or when studying at home.
We then went through the first biochem note. This was pretty much an overview of some basic chemistry with some new stuff too. You'll need to do the reading on this section, answer the radioisotope questions in the note and questions #1-5 listed after the radioisotope section of the note.

During the first class, the course information sheet will be discussed. This sheet can be downloaded here. Students will also complete a learning styles questionaire and evaluate their own learning style in order to create an individual learning plan. This questionaire can be linked to here and a description of the various learning styles can be found under the "Class Notes" section. Be sure to download and print the biochem notes for Wednesday.
