Important notice to all SBI4U students:
I've confirmed that I won't have the enzyme that is needed to perform the enzyme lab next week. It has been held up at the science supply company that I ordered from. So, I will be giving you your biochemistry test next week. I'm scheduling it for next Friday so that you have ample time to prepare for it. We will do some review next week. I would suggest that it's not too early to begin making study notes, or begin some other study activity, now. Check out the animations, tutorials, and videos that I've linked in the previous posts.

This week we have spent time taking up the big 3-D molecules lab. If you were absent for this, make sure you check your answers with someone in class. This is a very important study guide for the test on this material.
We then began looking at energy metabolism concepts in biology. This is a particularly difficult set of concepts in the course, so make sure you are devoting some time to this. Homework questions are listed at the right.
Your research report is due friday.

Today we worked through discussing the 3-D Macromolecules lab. We'll have to finish this on Monday. I've posted 2 new notes so you'll want to have those printed before Monday. Reminder: your research report is due on next Friday, so try to make some progress on this over the weekend. Have a great weekend....go Canada!

Today students completed part 2 of the 3-D molecules lab by using the HP mini-note computers. We will take up all the questions in this lab tomorrow. You should try to finish as many as you can for homework. You can view the text of the online portion of the lab at www.science.nelson.com, but you would need to download the CHIME plug-in if you want to be able to see the molecules in 3-D.

Today students discussed the textbook questions in groups. We then began the 3-D molecules lab. This will continue for the next few classes and will culminate on Friday. If you didn't complete the textbook questions, be sure to do these over this week.

Last week we worked through the macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. There is a large collection of textbook questions to complete related to this material. Students were also given another research class for their unit 1 research report (due Feb. 26th).

Today we discussed acids, bases, and buffer systems with a focus on the human carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer system. You are asked to read this section in the textbook and answer the questions as assigned at the end of the note. Remember that tomorrow in class you will discuss these answers in a small group and then work through reading about the macromolecules, carbohydrates, and lipids. Please answer the questions that are listed at the end of the carb section. See you Wednesday.

Students took up last night's homework and then began to work through the rest of the first note about molecular shapes and polarity. They also started to work through the rest of the second note on intermolecular forces and water. Please have the water table completed for homework. I've also posted the unit 1 application assignment that you will begin to work on tomorrow. I'd recommend that you read it over tonight and perhaps come to class tomorrow with an idea of what molecule you'd like to research.

Today we discussed the various types of learning styles that were identified yesterday through the Index of Learning Styles Questionaire that was completed. We also discussed some strategies types of learners should use when in the classroom or when studying at home.
We then went through the first biochem note. This was pretty much an overview of some basic chemistry with some new stuff too. You'll need to do the reading on this section, answer the radioisotope questions in the note and questions #1-5 listed after the radioisotope section of the note.
