On Wednesday we went through the enzyme note that was created by the two classes. If you've been absent you won't be able to access this note because you haven't been present to get your username and password for Google Docs. You can try contacting a class member and having them send you the note via email.
On Thursday we took up the macromolecule concept map and reviewed for tomorrow's test.

Here is a list of the topics we've studied so far. You can use this list to create study notes around.
1. Basic atomic structure (review from grade 9!)
2. Isotopes and radioisotopes (what is half-life, applications for them?)
3. Electronegativity (calculate delta En, what does this tell us?)
4. Intramolecular forces (ionic, polar covalent, nonpolar covalent bonds)
5. Intermolecular forces (van der Waals forces)
6. Unique properties of water
7. 4 shapes of molecules studied and relationship to polarity
8. Functional groups (significance and examples in macromolecules)
9. The macromolecules (structures, functions, examples)
-Carbohydrates (mono, di, polysaccharides)
-Lipids (triglycerides, sterols, waxes)
-Proteins (amino acids, peptide bonds, 4 levels of organization)
-Nucleic acids (DNA structure, ATP)
10. Study the 3-D molecule lab
11. Energy dynamics (2nd law of thermodynamics, chemical potential energy, free energy, entropy, exergonic vs. endergonic reactions, free energy diagrams)
12. Biologically relevant reactions (condensation, hydrolysis, reduction, oxidation)
13. Enzymes (structures, function, inhibition and control)

Here are two old tests/quizes that you can use as review for your biochemistry test. Your test will contain similar, not identical, questions.

Biochem Test

Energy and Enzymes Test

Important notice to all SBI4U students:
I've confirmed that I won't have the enzyme that is needed to perform the enzyme lab next week. It has been held up at the science supply company that I ordered from. So, I will be giving you your biochemistry test next week. I'm scheduling it for next Friday so that you have ample time to prepare for it. We will do some review next week. I would suggest that it's not too early to begin making study notes, or begin some other study activity, now. Check out the animations, tutorials, and videos that I've linked in the previous posts.
Here are some useful animations/tutorials on the macromolecules:

This week we have spent time taking up the big 3-D molecules lab. If you were absent for this, make sure you check your answers with someone in class. This is a very important study guide for the test on this material.
We then began looking at energy metabolism concepts in biology. This is a particularly difficult set of concepts in the course, so make sure you are devoting some time to this. Homework questions are listed at the right.
Your research report is due friday.
